Strange Things Song Bird pt.1

It can be argued that creativity and talent is innate. However, it can also be argued that talent and creativity can be taught. This have been an age-old argument long before our time.

In my Interview with the talented and creative strange things song bird, Juliet Robin, I was reminded by her that the principles of both creativity and talent can be taught, but being creative is something that is innate. Therefore, there is only a certain amount of creativity that a teacher or mentor can impart to a student. Thus, your talent is something that you have to be born with in order to execute fully and flawlessly.

This talent and creativity without a doubt is an innate ability for Juliet Nicole Robin. She comes from a family of musicians that ranges from her late father, mother, brothers and herself. Listening to her music and hearing her articulate about it, makes me wonder about how much sacrifice it takes to get this good at her creativity. While questioning her about this, she expressed that growing up, her family and her practiced every day, something that never changed in her life. To date she still practices everyday, until late hours in the night, sacrificing relationships and socializing with friends and family have all been endured in order for her to be this successful at her creativity. This reminded me of the an old saying, “practice makes perfect”. Something that Juliet and her band knows very well and is evident through their productions. Although, I tried on numerous occasions with her to sing and could not get past a simple note of “la la la la la aaa”, this also reminded me how much creativity is innate and how some people like myself aren’t born with musical voices like the amazing song bird Juliet Robin.

In her not so distant past she have attended and successfully completed programs she pursued at COSTAATT, BERKLEY and UWI respectively.

My interview with Juliet was some what very interesting, fun and enlightening. We talked about many things that ranged from her views of creativity, talent, beliefs and her childhood to becoming a musician with her parents guidance and support. Listening to her speak I can tell that she is very passionate about her work and what she does as an artist. According to her, over the years she have matured and blossomed, learning a lot about who she is as an artist and what she wanted to do with her life. She went on to express that everyday she works harder and tries to push the bar further so that when she creates, it is for herself but also for an audience who can fall in love with her music and feel her expression. As I continue speaking to Juliet I realize that she is a person who creates so that others can be inspired. She also expressed that growing up and finding herself, it was inspiration from many other artist that make her into the person she is today. Therefore, her desire is to allow other young men and women to be inspired by her work so that they can also go out and create and find their voice, their creativity and talent, just as she was inspired.

Juliet doesn’t see the stars as the limit, but she wants to pass the moons and stars! She wants to continue soaring and becoming brighter than any star in the sky. A desire that anyone can achieve once they focus and work towards their dreams. For Juliet, that Star maybe very soon, because recently she have been featured in the Dr. Roy Cape’s Book entitled “A Life in the calypso and Soca Bandstand”. She is the only female musician to be listed and featured in the book.

Listening to Juliet speak about creativity and talent, and her music, it would be impossible to create a single blog post for her. Therefore I have decided to create a second part to this blog post where you can read all her thoughts, inspirations, secrets, desires and struggles growing up and becoming herself. So look out for part two of this blog post next week.
