DONNA, THE ARTIST Pt.1

Donna Mae Clarke is an artist, a teacher and a student, amongst other roles she play on a daily basis. Donna Lives in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Donna and I are students of the same school, pursuing the same degree. I was so delighted to do a collaboration with Donna for Creative Diversity of Trinidad and Tobago, Blog. After knowing who Donna was, and seeing some of her work, I realized I had seen her work before, but didn’t know the artist. I now realize that one of the pieces I have admired is from my colleague, Donna Mae Clarke. In the interview that Donna and I had, I wanted to find out a lot more about Donna’s life and work.

DONNA, the Artist

donna

Donna Mae Clarke is from Trinidad and Tobago. She was born in Port of Spain, raised in Port of Spain, and to date she still lives in Port of Spain. She attended St Joseph’s Convent, and then to The University of the West Indies. After she graduated from the University of the West Indies, she started Valsayn Teacher’s College and completed the program she was pursuing. She later attended the Savannah school of designs and now is a student of COSTAATT.

Donna considers herself primarily an art educator. Then an artist, and a designer for stage.

Being an artist is a professional career for Donna Mae Clarke. She have been an artist professionally for over 28 years. She have been imparting her knowledge and skills as an artist to many students. To date, she have students who continues to paint, work as artist and or designer professionally. There are a portion of Donna Students that continues to paint and have been exhibiting their work over the years. Many of her students work, some of us are probably familiar with; seen before or probably on a regular basis when we pass their work on the different art exhibition walls across Trinidad. A more popular art exhibition wall that many of Donna students exhibit, are on the queens park oval wall.  For other students of Donna, they have taken the knowledge they have received from the artist, applied it and are now teachers; following in the steps of their art teacher, Donna Mae Clarke.

Artist teacher Donna Mae Clarke encourages all her students to believe in themselves. Take advise from wiser folks, be patient and to always remember that Rome was never built in a day. Gathering my thoughts from the interview with Donna, It is safe for me to say that, she is a great art teacher, seeing her work and some of her student’s work, she is an encouraging teacher that encourages her students to always be creative, but also be original in their expressions.

Donna and her family.

City girl takes T&T stage with critical eyes!

“It is not enough to have talent, but talent is important.”

It has been said before about acting; The definition of talent is the degree of depth of an actor’s imagination, and ability to enter into the imaginary world and play pretend.

Ria Ali! A young actress of Trinidad and Tobago, with great emotional facility, imagination, and fortitude, has proven over the years how great of an actress she is.

Becoming an actress was not this young woman’s dream; but we all know that sometimes the universe has its own destiny mapped out for us. At 20 years of age, Ria Ali graduated from the University of the West Indies with a bachelors degree. Soon after university, this young woman became a poetry teacher. Teaching sixth form students of one of Trinidad and Tobago top girl schools in Port of Spain.

Ria Ali was born in Trinidad, grew up in the Port of Spain environment. A city Girl! Being the only child, Ria developed the ability to express herself from a very young age through songs and writing. It was a way to entertain herself, when no one else was around. She attended the Maria Regina primary, then went onto to St. Joseph Convent high school, Port of Spain, before starting a degree at the University of the West Indies. It is probably safe to say this is the reason why she has become such a familiar face on many theatre productions. An imaginary mind from childhood to a sound and quality educational background! But its Ria’s opinion that her skills have developed after having been exposed to theatre and having a taste of theatre life.

Ria Ali

Professionally, Ria is a teacher. We all know that everyday as individuals, we are all actors. We put on a show for others on a bigger stage called, the life stage. For Ria, being an actress is only a hobby. However her skills as an actress is needed everyday. As a teacher, being an actress is what her career revolves around. Ria knows this too well and the importance of a good show to motivate and inspire her students everyday as if they are the audience of a theatre production.

“I Think while it is easy to say i am an actress, myself included and other actresses and actors aspires to be true performers, whereby we entertain an audience and immerse them so deeply into the story line at hand, that they forget that they are watching a theatrical performance, and believe it is real. I am, and hope to continue to be a true performer.”

There is something about music that gets people inspired and motivated to do things. Each person has their own selection of music they enjoy. For Ria Ali, Music is a therapy for her to prepare for a character she is about to play on stage. She expressed in an interview for Creative Diversity of Trinidad and Tobago, music gets her into the vibe of the particular character. However, when she meets a struggle to commit to the character, it is important for her to take a rest away from the script and return later with fresh eyes. When she returns, she has to walk the part of her character psychically, with costumes, the character’s body gestures and the different voices of the character. This gets her totally prepared. She admitted that she is a very hard critic on her performances, which have allowed her to expand on her creativity for the character she is about to portray on the theatrical stage.

Being a performer is enjoyable to Ria Ali. There are days when she is out performing and entertaining. Instead she could have been at home writing poems, or curled up on her bed, and watching television. This young actress does not regret being a performer. Even though there are days she wants to quit. Thanks to Leslie Ann Lavine and Aaron Schneider, fellow performers like herself. They have always been there to help Ria persevere and not quit.

Share the stage with Leslie Ann Levine for the production “Eat Ah Food”!

Over the last five years, Ria Ali performed in nine different stage plays in Trinidad and Tobago; Men are dogs, Love thy neighbors, Eat ah food, Scandal, and many others. To Ria Ali, Love thy Neighbours is her favourite stage performance, because it allowed her to step out of her comfort zone. Ria explained that every role  has been very important to her and has taught her many things for her everyday life. It has been a learning and experience and continues to be that for her. The cast members, directors and script writers are all inspiring and great to work with. The many different cast is an opportunity to meet and collaborate with great talents from sweet Trinidad and Tobago.

On stage with Ria Ali with a few familiar faces!

“I want to be remembered for my vision in the arts. I want people to see my makeup as an art form, because makeup is an art. I don’t want people to see makeup as just applying colors to the face and skin”. So say Dillya Benjamin, Makeup Artist, wife, and Mother. She expresses her passion and love for the art of makeup in an interview for Creative Diversity of Trinidad and Tobago.

DILLYA AND HER HUSBAND

At the age of 24, Dillya potential for makeup was discovered by one of her beauty therapy teachers of YTEPP, Ms. Wendy Bernard. The teacher encouraged Dillya to pursue makeup as it was a natural talent Dillya had for colors and application. It have been over six years since this young woman has been practicing makeup. She have practiced her art and worked her way up the ladder. Makeup has become Dillya hobby, her passion, her love and her career. With the encouragement and support from her Husband, she have been able to spread her wings in the art, follow her dreams and progress.”I am the centre roll when it comes to bringing my creativity to life. I want people to see makeup artistry as a true art and not just a way of making extra money or to get rich”.

Using inexpensive makeup, tells how great is a makeup artist! Dillya explains how a makeup artist can make his/ her work look flawless and his/her clients look like a million dollar model out of vogue magazine. She expressed that her faith in God have always helped her to succeed and be the makeup artist she ought. However when negative thoughts arise, it is with the help of her higher power she have the strength to push it very far, so that it doesn’t affect her craft. But when someone critic her work, she is very open and pleased with their feedbacks. She accepts every review as a learning and improvement mechanism.

“I love all of the work i have created and i would not change any of it, if I had the chance. However, I am very pleased  and impressed with the work I have created and the progress I have made over the years. I am more drawn towards one of my pieces, the spider web. Using a cheap black eyeliner and after 3 hours, a perfect and well thought-out spider web was created. After this technique and work, I knew and it showed my skills at its best”.

The culture of which she belongs and the society in which she lives plays a significant role in the way she do her art and is imprinted into her work. “My work is an evolution and with time and as the years pass, fashion and styles change. I tend to move with the times. I look back at my work  from years ago and the pieces are timeless. I can see the changes and improvements in my work. The feed back I receive are the same. Looking at my style of work, someone who knows my work can recognize it easily. They can also recognize and tell the time based on the finished editing and style of photographs”.

Jackson’s creativity is different from what our society expects of us. His work appeals to the eyes and sometimes to other parts of the body. His work Adventures the human nature, physique, and fashion, filled with emotion and intimacy. His photographs have been featured on many local magazine covers, and within the pages. Thus far, this outstanding photographer have authored two photography books based on his work. Each Photographer has his/ her own style of delivering their work. Roger’s work is powerful in its simplicity, yet complex at the same time. Looking at his work, is to see the very essence of nature and intimacy. His work shows how his eyes see’s things differently altogether and how well his camera lens explores nature of various perspectives.

In Trinidad and Tobago there is no laws for our art, creativity and designs.  Many creatives most times suppress their creativity in order to suit society expectations. While Jackson’s work are master pieces and is loved by many people around the world, he understands the mentality of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. He is honoured by the many positive feed back from the people who view his work and follow his journey. However because of our society he is suppressed of expressing all of his creative ability. “I tend to create work that will be “ACCEPTED” by the viewing public.”

He have helped many young models get into the industry by giving them the exposure they need, by working with them. However his Advise to all his young and upcoming models is to always ask questions and study the field thoroughly. He then went on to advice all upcoming photographers; “Take courses. Ask questions. Study the field as much as possible and do online research! Learn about your camera because your camera is like a paint brush. If you don’t know how to use it, you can never get the painting you dream of!”.

Powerful, Simplicity, yet complex. ABSOLUTPICS (Pt. 1)

“Photographers use their cameras as tools of explorations, passports to inner sanctum, instruments for change. Their images are proof that photography matters now more than ever!”

A sample of Roger Jackson Work!

1966232_10153811561965577_1149405055_o 71665_10153754867735577_1159140872_n

It was my first year using Facebook, and being a member. I was now learning to use the 5 year old, growing social media. Whenever I signed into Facebook to use the social network, almost everywhere on my feed there were a set of eye catching photographs with “ABSOLUTPICS” logo. I admired these photographs for hours and I try to visualize the story behind each. In my opinion it was very different, yet modern! I loved what I saw. From that moment I became a fan of photography done by ABSOLUTPICS. A few years later, I was given the opportunity to work as a model, with the creative photographer Roger Jackson. The man behind the Brand, ABSOLUTPICS. It was a pleasure working with Roger, I learned a lot about expressing my emotions for camera, allowing my body, thoughts and spirit to become in tuned with each other, not focusing on the camera, but rather becoming a masterpiece. It is my opinion, and I believe that it is the same of others, that Roger is not only a talented and skilled photographer, but also an all-rounded great guy.

ROGER JACKSON

1929542_42902415576_5514_n

Jackson was born in Pointe-A-Pierre, Trinidad. He studied at Pointe-A-Pierre Junior and then Pointe-A-Pierre Secondary school. At the age of 15, Roger Jackson love and passion for photography developed. While no one else in his family were photographers, or were interested in photography, his creative ability and motivation for the art was self taught.

We all know that in order to be good at something, we need to constantly practice it. Sometimes our talents and ability are given by nature (born with), however that does not mean we should not practice! For Roger, he knew the importance of practicing his talents! For many years after secondary school, this young man walked around with a camera and snapped at things that interest him. He explained to me that even while he was working with BWIA (Now Caribbean Airlines), he always walked with his camera and when his journey came to a stop, in different countries, he would take photographs of everything.

For some, photography is a means to earn a living and fame in this world, but for Roger Jackson, photography is an ultimate Passion (Hobby)! Anyone that knows of Roger, would know that he is a very shy person. However, that does not stop him from doing the things he loves, and is passionate about. He is a very hardworking and creative individual. He have worked as a model for VOGUE, Abercrombie & Fitch, and many others. He worked in the airline industry and also the hospitality industry for some years.

Recently this Shy photographer started a group called “BAD PARKERS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO”. The group was created to give a stress relief through laughter, about how inconsiderate bad parkers can be to other drivers. It became such a hit, that many persons joined the group and started the discussion. There were photographs each day showing different vehicles, and their creative parking ability that was unbalance and didn’t meet the artistic quality for them to possess a drivers permit! To date this group is still in existence and more people are being aware of it. Thanks to Roger, even when I go anywhere, I am now aware of parking correctly, because who knows, my car could be starring in the group too, and that is one publicity no one wants.

Simple! Yet gourmet chef from central Trinidad!

DSC_0351

“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”, this is an old saying, that i have heard for many years. It is my belief that the way to anyone or everyone’s heart is through their stomach, both literally and figuratively. Therefore in order to sweep anyone off their feet, being a good cook is very important! No one knows this better than young and budding chef Kailaash Ramhit.

Over the weekend, I met up with this young central Trinidad chef. When we met, I had the liberty to see the chef in action. He showed me how to create a simple, yet gourmet italian meal for four. I had the opportunity to help in the preparation of the food. When the meal was finished cooking, we all sat down and enjoyed the meal with a glass of white wine; Italian style.

DSC_0340

As we chatted after dinner, chef Kailaash shared his journey with me.

Kailaash Ramhit, was born in the year 1990 in SanFernando Trinidad. He is the last child of both his parents, and has one sibling, a brother! This young chef grew up in central Trinidad, and presently still live in that demographic area of the delicious island, Trinidad! Ramhit love and passion for food came as a result of high school, and his participation in food and nutrition class. After high school the young man love for food and his desire for preparing food grew stronger. With the support and encouragement rom his family members, he joined the Trinidad and Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute located in Chaguaramas Trinidad.

DSC_0352 DSC_0350

It was the year 2008, when Kailaash earned his credibility in the industry of culinary arts when he graduated with an Diploma in culinary Arts. However he knew the importance of furthering a solid education, and was determined to be well rounded in the industry, so he later pursued an Associate Degree program with the same institution. He then graduated with an Associate Degree in Culinary Management.

It have been four years since this young man have graduated from culinary school. Since then to now, he have worked in popular restaurants such as; Prive Bistro, J-ZZ’s International Steak House, and Mojo Restaurant. Recently he have started and have been successful at catering for private parties, weddings and any event under his catering name, “Capricorn Gourmet Delight”.

Chef Ramhit expresses that while being in the culinary arts industry, it can be very tiresome at times, but he enjoy what he does. Being a chef in his opinion is the greatest gift and accomplishment he have ever experienced. The satisfaction of seeing how people enjoy the food he have prepared and cooked. The request and demand of those around him for his creative master pieces. Being able to incorporate his culture and subculture into his food is so interesting and then preparing food for a wider range of people.

Ramhit, encourages all young people with this desire of cooking professionally, to follow their dreams and always aim for the skies. “The way in which we cook our food tells a lot of who we are. Therefore it is important to be creative as a culinary artist. Make Your food your own, follow the rules and laws, but apply what you have been thought, and incorporate your personal touches. There will be bumps along the way, but hold fast to your seat belt. Enjoy the bumps, because the storm and bump will surely pass”.

At Last! The truth of a mother, an artist and, a mentor!

“Colour is Trinidad. Colour is Carnival. I am deeply influenced by colour, from the many shades of colour of our people, to the complexion of our wet and dry seasons, to the flavours of our personalities.”– These are the words of Julie Gouveia Ferguson describing Trinidad and Tobago as a delicious twin-island republic that penetrates her approach to design/creativity.

Goddess Julie Gouveia Ferguson! Everyone who meets Julie would know that she is a Goddess. If for any reason you didn’t know this much about her, well you just haven’t received an email from her, and you probably have not had any true encounter with the divine. For example, Julie often does not refer to herself as human, but playfully as having been “assigned earth”. She is considered the goddess of Graphic Design at the College of Science Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT). She is a strong advocate for Apple Products, and a proud member of the Cult of Mac. All of her students would testify to her commitment to Apple. You’d think she considers herself to be the wife of the late Steve Jobs. She holds the firm belief that there is no other brand that can be compared to Apple. Period. Her sarcasm of the “other” brands of technology, enlighten, and have even convinced many of her students to switch to Apple products, and we were never disappointed with the switch.

For this vivacious woman, being a mother is the most important priority in her life, followed by being an artist and then being an educator (lecturer, teacher, mentor, etc.)

In an interview, this straight-forward designer expressed her commitment to being a mother. Her two beautiful daughters are the joy of her life, and her greatest achievement, and in her opinion, they will always come first before anything else in her life. She is always happy to speak of her love of being a parent. I observed her expression as it changed when she spoke about her two girls. The expression on her face was calm, and it instantly reminded me of the love of a mother; that is the love of Julie for her children. Those mothers who go beyond for their children, that is Julie. She added that becoming a parent was the most rewarding, and happiest moments in her life. The moment they were born, the moment she felt their tiny bodies in her hands and watching them grow each day continues to thrill her. She considers her children, her life. She refers to them as “my own humans”.

The Goddess and one of her daughters!

Julie Gouveia Ferguson has been an artist/graphic designer for many years. She has worked in the field of graphic design locally, and internationally – Advertising Agency (McCann Erickson), Television Station (WHMM Channel 32, Washington, D.C.), an Alternative Newspaper (Washington City Paper), and now, an Academic Institution (COSTAATT, as an Educator!). These are some of the many organizations, and companies this talented and vivacious woman has worked for, while pursuing her passion for design.

At a very young age, Julie’s ability to express herself through creativity was discovered. Though her parents, and those around her could have discouraged her pursuit of art, they embraced it. As she grew older, with encouragement from her parents, friends and loved ones, art and design, and exploring ideas she became more open minded to the varied options before her with regards to design solutions. As Mrs. Gouveia Ferguson continued to talk about her growth in the field, she explained that learning to express herself visually (via art and design) became more prominent, more addictive, and more passionate.

Over the years Julie has created what she calls “her masterpieces”. One design she is most proud of to date is a CD cover done for David Rudder, which he gave to President Barrack Obama during the 2009 Caribbean Summit held in Trinidad. “Just knowing my work would be seen, and touched by President Barrack Obama was enough to keep me on a cloud for a very long time”. Another piece of work done by this youthful artist was a design done for the fashion designer, Everett Hall in Washington D.C.. She had complete control over the entire art production of this piece. She did art direction of the photo shoot, the wardrobe selection, the location for photography, the design, and the layout. The billboard-size ad was done for the Metropolitan buses in Washington D.C. which operate between D.C., Maryland and Virginia. “Seeing my work on buses driving in and around the nation’s capital was such a thrill. What was even more exciting (and scary) was following these buses through the streets, hoping that homeland security would not pick me up as some threat, should any of the drivers report a strange woman following their bus on a motor cycle.”

Julie often explains that being an artist is not a 9-5 job, the hours are long and often arduous. Usually as an artist, your thoughts, even when you have left the office, are still swirling around the design or a particular job you are working on. As an artist, we sometimes sacrifice our sanity and family for our work as a creative. Many designers, like Julie, consider the design profession a 24-hour commitment. This often forces them to sacrifice their family time as they are tired or either too exhausted to do much else. Julie tells me that while she has been in the field of graphic design for many years, people would expect and believe that she has learned how to manage her time. As a creative, ideas and inspirations come at any time, it can come when you are sleeping and sometimes it can wake you from your sleep at un-godly hours of the night. Julie, along with so many of her design colleagues, usually sleep with a sketch book beside her bed.

Julie believes that as creatives, we speak to ourselves, laugh at our own jokes, scream, and shout when no one is around, this is our norm. So many times we sacrifice our sanity. For her, there is no such thing as “normal”. For many, when they’ve met her for the first time, they think she is crazy, but she is very sane.

Ever so often our brains take the back seat mode and we are left in mental blocks. Some of us need different inspirations and motivations to get our brain back into its driving seat. For Julie, music is her therapeutic inspiration for creating. “Two Steps From Hell” is her favourite music group. She says Two Steps From Hell is her default music. She often listens to them to reboot, refocus, and direct her creative energy to the task ahead. Listening to music calms her down and allows her to mentally travel. Everyone has his/her own interest, some believe in movies, or books, but for her music is central. Music embraces her, frees her mind and it is a part of her as a creative. If you should ever travel with this creative woman physically, be sure to know that she will be more focused on the music on her iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Travelling with Music.

“You must embrace confidence. When you design, give it your best. Understand that there will be those who will like, and those who will dislike. Above all, be confident. Do not mistake confidence for arrogance. The moment you stop believing in your work, your spirit is broken and your passion is lost. Be confident.”- As a mentor, Julie advises her students and other young artists to always be confident. While most people see her as an out-going person, she describes herself as socially challenged. With her work, however, she is fierce, and fearless. She is very straightforward and serious about her work as an artist. She teaches her students the fundamentals, and foundations of design in all areas – principles of design, visual thinking, conceptualization skills, critical thinking skills and analysis. This is just one aspect of knowledge she imparts to her students. To Julie, her students are another reason, besides her family and friends that allow her to persevere in the field as an artist. In her own words, “My classroom is my sanctum sanctorium (my holy place)”, this shows the kind of commitment this educator has for her job as a teacher/ lecturer and to her students. She is a person who encourages others to strive for excellence, while she understands that we all are humans and may fall short sometimes.

Taking a course with Mrs Gouveia Ferguson guarantees a holistic approach to graphic design. Students must incorporate what has been taught in class into their design and show an understanding of the principles and fundamentals of designs. While learning is essential and needed, there are different methods of imparting knowledge, for this lecturer being conservative is definitely not her method of teaching. The process of learning can be fun. Therefore expect in her class to never have a dull moment. She is a true inspiration to many young artists and a great role model to her students.
